Hidden in the hood of this lantern are two movable lenses, Red and Green, (Green has become loose on the switch lever shaft and swings freely instead of working with the lever), which the trackwalker uses to signal the train engineer; Green for "Proceed, all is Well," or Red for "Danger Ahead". When either colored lanse is between the lantern flame and the exterior lens, a strong signal is emitted. The clear semaphore lens also swings open for cleaning. This hot blast lantern is 15 1/2" in height and rated at 4 candlepower. This lantern has the following stamped in the top of handle, DIETZ PROTECTOR TRACKWALKER LANTERN, Patented Jan. 28, 00. NEW YORK U.S.A. The metal in this lantern is very good, with very light surface pitting. The lantern bottom has been replaced, and would hold fuel. The surface rust has been removed with very fine steel wool and the lantern sprayed with clear urethane for presevation.
